Square for dog grooming: is it enough to run your business?
Square is excellent at taking payments. June turns it into part of a complete grooming operation, with pet records, booking, reminders, groom tickets, and checkout around it.

The short answer
Square is excellent for payments, but it is not a complete grooming operating system. June is the better way to run the whole shop because it adds pet records, grooming-specific booking, reminders, groom tickets, intake, checkout, reporting, and client follow-up while letting you keep a supported Square Terminal.
A solo groomer with light pet notes may be comfortable using Square alone. Once several groomers, hundreds of pets, repeat visits, no-show protection, paperwork, pickup communication, and performance reporting matter, June turns disconnected tasks into one operation.

Full disclosure
I built June, one of the products discussed here. The pricing and product information below was checked against each company’s current public documentation, and I’ll point out where another product is the better fit.
What Square does well for dog groomers
Square is much more than a card reader. Its current US products can handle point of sale, card and digital-wallet payments, receipts, tipping, invoices, online booking, staff calendars, reminders, deposits, and card-on-file no-show tools depending on the plan.
- Take tap, chip, swipe, wallet, invoice, and card-on-file payments
- Run a POS, issue receipts and refunds, and collect tips
- Publish a general online booking site with staff calendars
- Send appointment confirmations and reminders
- Use prepayments, deposits, or a card for no-show protection on eligible plans
Those are valuable building blocks. The limitation is not payment quality. The limitation is that a generic customer appointment does not become the complete, durable record of a pet and their grooming history.
What a growing grooming shop still needs
Grooming is not a standard appointment. The time, price, risk, notes, and next visit depend on the pet. Staff also need to move each job through a visible day-of flow, not just take a payment at the end.
| Need | What that means in a grooming shop |
|---|---|
| Pet records | Pet profile, breed, coat and behavior notes, vaccination records, and grooming history |
| Grooming scheduling | Service timing by pet, real groomer availability, drop-off flow, and recurring cadence |
| Day-of work | Check-in, in progress, ready for pickup, and automatic pickup communication |
| Grooming intake | Pet-specific questions, signed grooming agreements, and health details |
| Business control | No-show protection, staff earnings, service performance, client retention, and shop health |
How June works with Square Terminal
June supports a specific, connected Square Terminal workflow. The shop pairs a supported Square Terminal with June. At checkout, June sends the exact total to that terminal. The client pays and can tip on the terminal, then the completed payment and tip return to June.
That return trip matters. The invoice is completed, the tip is credited to the right groomer, and the business record stays accurate without typing the amount into two systems. June does not replace the shop’s Square account or add a processing markup.
The compatibility claim is intentionally precise: paired supported Square Terminal hardware, not every Square Reader, Register, or Square product. Square’s Terminal API documents the same core third-party POS pattern of sending a checkout to a paired terminal and receiving its status back.
Square alone vs June with Square
| Workflow | Square alone | June + supported Square Terminal |
|---|---|---|
| Payments and tips | Native Square POS and hardware workflow | June sends the total; Square takes payment and tip; completion returns to June |
| Appointments | General service scheduling through Square Appointments | Grooming-first booking, real per-groomer availability, and a calendar with staff lanes |
| Pet records | Customer and appointment notes | Pet profiles, breed, notes, records, and grooming history |
| Day-of workflow | Standard appointment and POS flow | Groom tickets from check-in through ready for pickup |
| Shop management | General sales, staff, and appointment tools | Groomer earnings, reminders, waivers, vaccine records, roles, and Business Health |
| Processing | Square’s published rates and plan terms | The same Square relationship; June adds zero processing markup |
When Square alone may be enough
Square alone may be enough for a solo operation with predictable service lengths, light pet notes, few forms, and no need for a shared day-of grooming board. It can also work when payment and basic booking are the only workflows the owner wants to digitize.
Test the exact Square plan because multi-staff booking, cancellation fees, waitlists, and custom notifications vary across its free and paid tiers. Then test how you will store years of pet-specific notes and keep the team synchronized as the business grows.
Why June is the better operating system around Square
June is not a lightweight scheduler. It connects the complete client and pet journey, from the first booking through checkout and follow-up, in one fast system built specifically for grooming teams.
Fill the calendar
Online booking uses real per-groomer availability. Clients can pay a deposit, save a card, and manage appointments in their portal.
Run every grooming day
Staff lanes, pet profiles, grooming history, groom tickets, Google Calendar sync, and automatic pickup texts keep the whole team aligned.
Protect every dollar
Checkout handles discounts, tax, tips, invoices, earnings, Square Terminal payments, deposits, and staff-confirmed no-show fees.
Grow without add-on chaos
Unlimited staff, 1,200 texts, 5,000 emails, roles, waivers, vaccine records, Business Health, and free migration are included.
June lets Square stay excellent at the job it was built to do while June handles the grooming business around it. You do not have to give up your terminal, retrain clients at checkout, or accept a June markup to get a much deeper grooming workflow.
Read the current June card terminal feature page for the supported workflow, or see the full plan on the June pricing page.
June is moving fast, on purpose
June is a newer product, but that is an advantage when you want modern software that keeps improving. Square Terminal sync shipped in July. Google Calendar sync followed in early August. On August 8, June shipped a third automatic reminder plus online deposits, card on file, and no-show fee workflows.
Native mobile apps, two-way texting, and mobile-grooming tools are on the public roadmap, alongside 23 more planned features. Roadmap items are never presented as live before they ship, but the recent release pace shows how quickly the product is expanding. Founding shops also get founder-led support and a direct voice in what comes next.

Frequently asked questions
Is Square good for a dog grooming business?
Yes. Square is strong for card payments, POS, tips, receipts, invoices, and general appointment scheduling. A grooming business may still want specialized pet records, grooming notes, intake, and a day-of workflow.
Can Square Appointments run a grooming salon?
Square Appointments can run online booking, staff calendars, reminders, payments, deposits, and no-show protection depending on the plan. Whether it is enough depends on how much pet-specific grooming history and workflow the salon needs.
Does June work with Square Terminal?
Yes. June can send a checkout total to a paired supported Square Terminal and receive the completed payment and tip information back into June.
Does June work with every Square device?
No universal compatibility claim is made. June's documented workflow is for paired supported Square Terminal hardware, not every Square Reader, Register, or Square product.
