What texting really costs in grooming software
Wholesale, a text is a fraction of a cent. Here is what platforms charge groomers for it, with verified numbers, and the questions to ask before you sign.

The short answer
At wholesale, a standard text message costs a fraction of a cent. Most grooming platforms resell it through credit packs, tier locks, or annual add-ons at many times that. June publishes its rate instead: 1,200 texts included every month, then $0.009 USD per extra text, zero markup, with two-way texting in the base plan.
I build June, so read this knowing where I stand. But every number below is either a platform’s own published pricing, verified on 2026-08-12, or a public wholesale rate you can check yourself. Texting is where grooming software bills quietly grow, and it is the easiest line to understand once someone shows you the raw cost.

Full disclosure
I built June, one of the products discussed here. The pricing and product information below was checked against each company’s current public documentation, and I’ll point out where another product is the better fit.
What a text message actually costs
Software platforms do not have secret phone lines. They buy messaging from wholesale providers, and those providers publish their rates: at Telnyx and Twilio, a standard US SMS segment lists for well under one cent. Carriers add small pass-through fees, also published, also fractions of a cent.
So when a platform sells you a pack of 100 “SMS credits” for a few dollars, the arithmetic is not complicated. The raw material costs pennies. Everything above that is margin, and unlike the subscription price on the website, this margin usually is not advertised anywhere.
The three ways platforms charge for texting
Across the grooming software market, texting pricing follows three patterns:
- Credit packs. A small monthly allowance, then prepaid top-ups. Groomsoft includes 100 texts a month on monthly billing; Pawfinity meters texts per message on top of the plan.
- Tier locks. The texting shops actually want lives on a higher plan. DaySmart Pet includes full two-way texting from its $149 tier; MoeGo caps texts by plan level, with charges beyond the cap.
- Add-on bundles. Texting sold as a separate product. Gingr’s messaging bundle is an annual subscription with metered usage after the included amount.
None of these are scams; they are pricing choices. But each one makes the real monthly cost of the software hard to predict, and each one gets more expensive precisely when reminders are doing their job and your shop is busy.
Platform by platform, verified
Current published texting terms, from each platform’s own pricing pages. Where something is not published, the table says so rather than guessing.
| Platform | Texts included | Beyond the allowance |
|---|---|---|
| June | 1,200/month, two-way, and client replies don't count | $0.009 USD per extra SMS segment |
| MoeGo | Salon: 300 on Basic, 1,350 on Growth and Ultimate; Ultimate adds unlimited automated messages | Extra SMS credit packages are available; package prices are not publicly listed |
| DaySmart Pet | 500 Basic; 1,000 Deluxe and Deluxe Growth; 2,500 Premium; 5,000 Premium Growth | Not publicly listed |
| Gingr | Automated notifications are included; two-way and marketing SMS are add-ons | All-in-One Messaging is $225/subdomain/year, includes 1,000 sent/received SMS monthly, then $0.04 to $0.02 per segment by volume |
| Groomer.io | Unlimited two-way SMS and automated calls | Included for operational messages; SMS campaigns are priced separately |
| Groomsoft | 100/month on monthly billing; 500 on annual billing | Prepaid packs: $10/100 down to $350/10,000 ($0.10 to $0.035 per SMS) |
| Pawfinity | Up to 250/month on Royal; lower-plan allowance is not quantified publicly | $0.05 each under 500, scaling to $0.035 at 1,501+ outbound messages, plus applicable carrier surcharge |
| Savvy Pet Spa | 150 on Starter; 350 on Growth and Multi Salon | Top-up pricing is not publicly listed |
| GrooMore | 400 Standard; 800 Premium | Not publicly listed |
Credit where due: Groomer.io includes unlimited texting in its flat price, and for a texting-heavy shop that hates metering, that is a genuinely strong offer. The comparison to make there is on the rest of the workflow, not on messaging.
Segments: the fine print that changes the bill
Texts are billed in segments, not messages. A plain message fits 160 characters in one segment. Add an emoji or a curly quote and the whole message switches encoding, dropping the limit to 70 characters. A friendly two-sentence reminder with an emoji can quietly bill as three segments.
This is why “300 texts included” and “300 segments included” are very different promises, and why the honest comparison between platforms is always in segments. When a vendor quotes an allowance, ask which one they mean.
Two-way texting changes the math
One-way reminders have a predictable cost: a few texts per appointment. Two-way texting is different. Once clients can text the shop, they do: reschedule questions, “can you fit him in” photos, running-late messages. That is exactly what you want, because every one of those texts replaces a phone call.
But it also means inbound volume you cannot control. If replies count against your allowance, or bill per message, a chatty week costs you money. On June, client replies never count against the included 1,200; only what the shop sends is metered. Whatever platform you choose, get the inbound answer in writing.
Five questions to ask any vendor
- Does the base plan include two-way texting, or only outbound reminders?
- What does one extra text cost, in dollars, after the allowance?
- Do client replies count against the allowance?
- Is the allowance in messages or in segments?
- Is the texting number the shop’s own number, and what happens to it if you leave?
A vendor with fair texting economics answers all five in one email. The full June answer is on the pricing page: one plan, 1,200 texts and 5,000 emails included, $0.009 USD per extra text after that, zero markup, replies free.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a text message actually cost to send?
At wholesale messaging providers like Telnyx and Twilio, a standard US SMS segment has published rates under one cent. That is the raw cost a software platform pays, before any markup it adds when reselling texts as credits or add-ons.
What is an SMS segment?
A segment is the billing unit of a text. A plain message fits 160 characters in one segment; using emoji or special characters drops that to 70, and longer messages split into multiple segments. Platforms meter segments, so compare segment allowances, not message counts.
Which grooming software includes two-way texting?
June includes a two-way texting inbox in its single plan, and Groomer.io includes unlimited texting in its flat price. On most other grooming platforms, two-way texting is a paid add-on, a credit pack, or locked to a higher tier: DaySmart Pet includes it from its $149 tier, and Gingr sells it as an annual messaging bundle.
Do client replies count against a text allowance?
It varies by platform, and it is worth asking directly. On June, client replies never count against the included 1,200 monthly texts; only messages the shop sends are metered.
